Bowloco Feedback
Posted August 9th, 2010.Tweet
A few weeks ago, we introduced some new bowls. Unlike our old compostable bamboo bowls, these bowls are recyclable plastic, feature a tight-fitting lid (which won’t leak like the old bowls), are washable, microwavable, and reusable, and come in different sizes.
We were pretty excited for the new bowls (now you can shake your salad in the bowl to fully coat every piece of lettuce with dressing!), but the feedback started rolling in very quickly. We’ve heard a lot of things, both positive and negative, but we of course want MORE feedback.
Leave your comments below (with your boloco card number, of course) and we promise to take them to heart. And, of course, we’ll be sure to follow-up.

SO… I totally understand why you would want to provide better control of portions–I knew I was getting away with murder when I ordered a small, and my weight watchers points were totally inaccurate. However, I’m a little worried about the environmental impact of using more plastic, especially since number 5 isn’t that easily recycled. I am torn, though, because I didn’t realize that the tortilla–aka edible packaging–was FIVE whole ww points. Bottom line: I’m conflicted!

Hello Boloco Powers that be!
I am a fan of your product and the company in general. The crew at Children’s hospital is fantastic, and I frequent that location for 4 meals in a typical week. I have also used the catering service several times with much success.
The new bowls are a major let down, though. The worst thing when eating a burrito is getting an all-rice bite. This is exactly what happens with the new bowls. Gone are the days of coating my burrito-y goodness with green Tabasco and mixing away until each bite is perfect. When I try this now, I just make a mess and have to worry about spilling on my work clothes! The last bowl I had (Classic Mexican, + pickled onions) was the worst experience I’ve had at Boloco to date, and I attribute this to the new packaging.
Please consider offering bowls in the same material that is closer to the old size. Emphasize portion control with your employees. Failing that, give customers the option to have the bowl or salad tossed before it is packaged (see: Illegal Pete’s in CO).
Thanks and keep up the great work!
Kristen
I love the new bowls! The portions are so much better (and better for you) and I’ve been re-using the them for when I pack my own lunches the other four days of the week! They’re perfect! I was never a fan of the old bowls, they leaked, and got soggy if I didn’t eat my burrito bowl immediately upon returning to my desk with it. Plus I could never save some for later and take it with me without worrying about it leaking everywhere.
Thanks boloco, I think this move was a win-win!
While I am a fan of the sizing- I actually find them easier to eat from being a little more compact instead of all spread out- I wish they were available in a more environmentally friendly option. I’m not a fan of plastic- it uses up fossil fuels, making it dumps gross fumes into our air, and recycling plant conditions aren’t much better. Love the size, love the idea, just wish it came in a more environmentally friendly, compostable option
I like the sizing options but hate the plastic content of them. You state it’s recyclable, but how many of them outside of your stores actually get recycled?
Plastic, though convenient, is largely an irresponsible option that will remain in landfills and taint ground water for hundreds of years to come. Go back to the compostable bowls.
Less than air-tight seals and perhaps slightly higher costs are more responsible environmentally than plastic.
I love the sizing, but I have to agree with JB’s posting on August 18. The new bowls are not good for the environment. Let’s face it, the amount of individuals who will actually reuse or recycle these bowls is too few. Plus the toxins created just making them does not equate. Please look for more enviromentally friendly options.
Not a fan, to be honest, for two reasons. First, I am now getting a lot less food for my money. I have always ordered the large burrito, and those plastic containers, even the large ones, definitely hold less than the paper ones used to. I know that you haven’t changed your recipe, but I’m not eating the recipe but whatever your crew puts into my bowl, which, again, was significantly more before. Second, environmentally speaking this is definitely a step down. Also, I can see how the paper bowls might be problematic in terms of soaking through, but that’s never been an issue for me.
I understand your need for portion control, but am not a fan of the plastic containers. Please bring back the cardboard bowls. It seems to me that it shouldn’t be hard to make them in 3 sizes.
Hey Boloco!
What if you offered bamboo bowls AND plastic bowls? You could let customers choose which one they want. It seems like both have pros and cons (e.g. bamboo is more recyclable while plastic doesn’t get soggy).
I love the new bowls – but I have a lifestyle that can accommodate plastic. I will reuse the bowls and then when the are no longer re-usable, I will recycle via my town. It’s a win for me – I LOVE to shake up my burrito bowl!
